Our action plan on the path toward cleaner air

The goals of our future projects and activities related to improving air quality, focused on reducing PM2.5 levels to those recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) (an annual average of 5 µg/m³) and aligned with EU legal regulations (an annual average of 10 µg/m³ according to new draft laws for 2030), will focus on the following:

• Continuous monitoring of air quality and informing the public about current conditions

• Cooperation with healthcare professionals to provide better and more effective guidance to the population on the harms and consequences of exposure to polluted air

• Implementation and oversight of the pollutant register (PRTR) at the Bosnia and Herzegovina level

• Identification of major individual polluters (thermal power plants, heating plants, industry) and reducing their impact on air quality through installation of efficient filtration systems or transition to cleaner and more efficient energy sources

• Reducing pollution from individual heating systems by expanding district heating networks, supporting the purchase of efficient stoves/boilers, and promoting environmentally friendly fuels

• Popularization and modernization of public transport to make it more attractive to users who otherwise rely solely on private cars

• Reducing the convenience of private car use in city centers through various measures

• Increasing energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy

• Monitoring air pollution levels from landfills

• Implementation of regulatory and control mechanisms by strengthening the work of inspectorates responsible for air quality monitoring

Your action plan on the path toward cleaner air

Each of us, through our behaviour and habits, affects the quality of the water, air, and soil around us. With responsible, aware, and informed actions “around our own home”, we set an example and help change the situation in our community, our country, and even the planet. This is just a list of some of the steps you, as an individual, can take to help improve air quality:

• use your private car as little as possible, especially for short trips (consider alternatives such as walking, cycling, or public transport)

• switch off your vehicle while it is parked or standing in traffic jams

• consider switching to an electric or hybrid vehicle

• use wood that is as dry as possible for heating (it has higher calorific value and burns cleaner)

• phase out coal from use in stoves/boilers

• use the most efficient stoves/boilers possible

• inform yourself about the composition and calorific value of pellets when purchasing them

• do not burn waste or biomass generated by “clearing/cleaning” green areas

• improve the insulation of your home
